Neil Johnson 2001 DJ Guide - Introduction

I thought that I'd put a bit of background on myself to start with. Personally I like websites that have a bit of info on the person that put them there.

That embarrassing photo on the right is me and a mate of mine at the Cream in Liverpool absolutely off our trolleys. I'm the one on the right. My name is Neil Johnson but everyone tends to call me Jonno - in fact if someone says Neil I don't even remember to answer them. I've been DJing for a few years now and have managed to get a spot in a local nightclub - The Plaza. I've also DJ'd in a few other venues including the Tivoli in Buckley, North Wales. I'm 20, Live near Liverpool and mad on vinyl and clubbing - what more is there to say?

I've been listening to dance music since I was wearing nappies or dypers whatever you want to call them. It all started with the old skool classics, On a Ragga Tip, Prodigy's Outa Space, The Shamen, Carl Cox (long before superstar status). Then I was into the illegal rave scene, Happy Hardcore, wave your glowsticks and blow your whistles - Imagine yellow smiler faces on the front of everybody's T-shirt and back pockets of their jeans. This music was really big at the time and no-one thought it would ever die. Venues such as Doncaster Warehouse, Club Kinetic, Fantazia. DJ's Mikey B (now a member of radio 1's Dreem Teem), Ratpack, Demand, Vibes and Lively. This lasted for a couple of years until I decided that the music was too fast and it was starting to die off.

It was when I first heard about Ibiza when I was about 15/16 and started listening to Compilation CD's. Tunes like Baby D's Let me be your Fantasy, Tori & Amos Stamp, Stretch & Vern I'm alive, the Nightrain. I then started buying mixed CD's from Jeremy Healy, Sonique and Pete Tong, I think this is the point when I started to get into the club scene. From there I've moved on to more progressive house and trance, listening to the likes of the Global Underground releases, DJ's such as Seb Fontaine, Paul Oakenfold, Sasha, Darren Emerson and Guy Ornadel. I am very much into the hard house style and admire DJ's like Fergie, Lisa Lashes and Andy Farley, this is the style that I play more of than anything as the progressive music is more to superclubs like Cream and Gatecrasher.

I think like any other DJ my goal is to get to the top level, a residency at a well known venue would be nice.

If anyone who lives in the North West of England would like to hear me play I am at the Plaza nightclub, St Helens, Friday nights, 10pm-11.15, 1am-1.30am
