Neil Johnson 2001 DJ Guide - Record Labels

If you are new to the DJ game, you have probably found it hard to shop for records that suit your taste. I know I did, spending hours flicking through hundreds of records not having a clue what they were. I was even picking up hip/hop records by accident, taking a handful of dance records to the deck with one obvious gangsta rap record sticking out, and I was wondering why everyone was looking at me a bit funny - embarrassing!

If you write what records you want down on a piece of paper along with the label it's on then it makes it a lot easier to find. I tend to do this when listening to Judge Jules warmup to the weekend's or Pete Tong. If they slam a phat record out I'll write it down and then pick it up on the weekend providing it is available. Not all records are easy to get hold of.

Here are some labels you might want to check out:

Nukleuz

If you like it hard then this is the place to get it!! This label has signed the likes of BK, Fergie, Mauro Picotto, Mario Piu. Hard house at its best to progressive tracks. Classics such as Somebody Answer the Phone to CRW - I Feel Love. Releases many hard house tracks on the Hard Beat vinyl's, check it out.

Additive

This is a good label if your into trance but of the harder variety. Tracks including Da Hool and Brainbug - Nightmare were released on this label. A choice for any trance fan.

Platipus

More trance here. Originally released Robert Miles's Children. Not to knowledgeable about this label though.

Neo

Has released some huge tracks from the likes of Darude - Sandstorm & Feel the beat. Some good trance and house records available. Not a label I tend to buy much but worth a look.

Manifesto

This record label is one of the biggest releasing trance from the Space Brothers to Bouncy tunes including the likes of Yomanda. A favourite for any Judge Jules fan.

Defected

Funky uplifting house. If this is your style then this is your label. Releases such as OnephatDiva, Eddie Amador's classic Rise and one of the latest releases Space Invader. I tend to play these records in a warmup set. No hard house or trance here!

Extravaganza

Pumping Baleric trance at it's best. Agneli & Nelson, Chicane, Tomski, Baleric Bill, L'esperenza. A great label for the more commercial side of trance.

AM:PM

A bit of variety in this label ranging from house, trance to 2 step garage. Big tunes have been Southside spinners - Lovestruck, Scott & Leon - You Used to Hold Me and DJ Jean's the Launch. I'm not to sure about this label, they seem to sign anything.

Perfecto

Trance, trance and more trance this time coming from Paul Oakenfold. Released one of the biggest tunes of last year, 'Bullet in the Gun'. If you like your trancey vocal riffs then take a more closer look at this label.

Positiva

A good dance label. The more commercial side of trance and house including Alice Deejay, Fragma, Coco. Good tunes include Verrecocha - Carte Blanche, DJ Sakin & Friends - Nomansland. Every DJ has at least one record from this label in their box.
